Behind the Design: White Rabbit

Behind the Design: White Rabbit

"Remember what the dormouse said; feed your head" - White Rabbit, Jefferson Airplane

Being neurodivergent, I have always felt that the world doesn't make much sense.  I was told I was intelligent despite struggling immensely in school, taught the importance of honesty only to grow up and realize my inability to be an effective liar is more a hinderance than a virtue.  It's for these reasons I've always been fond the Lewis Carroll classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.  A story in which Alice must navigate a world that makes little sense to her.

My love for the story (and the art it inspired) led me to release one of my very first kits named Alice's Adventures which was only available in a printable format.  From those early days on Etsy, The Tipsy Narwhal has undergone its own transformation.  Growing product lines, moving to its own site, I found myself yet again in a world that made little sense to me (SEO and platform algorithms continue to lose all meaning in my head).

The frustrations with navigating an increasingly confusing world has led me to refocus on my roots.  How art is the medium where I can best express my thoughts and feelings.  How planning helped me set and achieve my daily tasks and larger goals. Revisiting some of my old designs has helped rekindle the excitement and optimism that I had when I first opened my shop.

In redesigning Alice's Adventures I didn't focus on the book as much as I did the song "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane.  A song that uses the imagery of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to encourage people the reject the hypocrisy of a cynical world, and instead encourage curiosity.  Granted I use art instead of handfuls of hallucinogens to "feed my head", but my peace is still there.  When the world gets me down, I'll find my answers through creativity.
